The author, Dr Johnny Lee, is a Colombo Plan scholar, Singaporean dental surgeon, author and publisher. To date, he has written and published nine books, eight under his pen name J. P. Lee, and one book on humour, under the pen name Manny Larfs.
His first book, Dusk To Dawn, published in 1996, was an instant success, having sold 10,000 copies just in Singapore and Malaysia.
The central theme of all J. P. Lee's books is on the constant battle between good and evil, spiritual books on a more personal account of his own experiences of childhood trauma and the healing of memories. He has also written two novels, the first in 2002 – Curse Of The Green Dragon (A Hakka Story), and its sequel in 2004, Breaking The Curse Of The Green Dragon (A Hakka Story), stretching five generations of intriguing adventures, discovery, rediscovery, healing and reconciliation. There are interesting sections on traditions, legends, superstitions, love and betrayal, all weaved into these two narrative novels of colourful and passionate characters, a spiritual philosophy of compassion and self-knowledge. Many readers consider these books as Lee’s rendition of the cycle of ‘humanhood’, so profoundly put together, verging on the threshold of experiential wisdom and sound conscience – where he so cleverly combines facts with fictions to shape the fate and destiny of people’s lives, a masterly treatment of the primeval forces of nature.
In 1992, four years after an experience of a spiritual emergence, he was led to North Wales, England and underwent the 30-day Silent Spiritual Exercises of St Ignatius of Loyola at St Beuno’s, the Jesuits Monastery. This further led him to the silent contemplative prayer exercises of St Teresa of Avila and St John of the Cross of the Carmelite Spirituality.
Lee describes himself as a son, a dental surgeon, a husband, a father, and now a grandfather, an author and a publisher, a teacher and facilitator as well as a continuing student and participant at workshops. He says there is no end to learning.
Constantly, he asks, But who am I really? His constant search for God and for true meaning and purpose in life led him to finding himself instead. He says, "To learn the truth, I must first unlearn the untruth.” His continuous journey into the unknown and the unchartered territories helps him to uncover a hidden doorway to God, the God who created him and gave him his spiritual name, which he only reveals as 'P' in his pen name J. P. Lee. He says, "John is the name my earthly father gave me; P is the name my heavenly Father gave me." The discovery of his spiritual name was paramount in his quest for "Who am I?"
This led to his first book, Dusk To Dawn. After this, there was no stopping him, as he began to work on his other books. He is confident his readers will similarly discover themselves when they read and discover why God has called him 'P' and what 'P' means for him.
"I find this book, God In The Mist, to be a very honest and open account of the author's personal experiences of, and insights into, the spiritual life. I am sure readers will benefit from it"
- Chris Soh, SJ.
"I enjoy reading this book very much. It is a record of a spiritual odyssey, as real and living as what St. Augustine described in his Confessions, as sharp and compelling as what Blaise Pascal wrote in his testimony. I think that anyone who reads it with heart as well as mind will be moved closer on the personal pilgrimaging journey into God!"
- Robert McCulloch, Columban Fathers.
